Ontario Seeking Public Input to Strengthen Worker Safety
Ontario is seeking public input to help create a voluntary accreditation program that will recognize employers who go above and beyond to promote health and safety practices on the job.
Many workplaces around the world have begun using internationally recognized standards for occupational health and safety management systems to drive continual improvement of health and safety in their organizations. Effective implementation of these standards means that more workers get home safe and healthy each and every day.
To encourage the uptake of these programs, Ontario is seeking public input from both workers and employers to help create an accreditation and employer recognition program.

Improving workplace health and safety is part of our plan to create jobs, grow our economy and help people in their everyday lives.
- Since 2003, Ontario’s annual rate of workplace injuries has dropped by more than 50 per cent, making the province’s workplaces the safest in Canada and among the safest in the world.
- Ontario has previously introduced training standards to prevent falls and improve safety for workers who work at heights as well as training for joint health and safety committees to represent workers and employers at Ontario workplaces.
“We are steadfast in our commitment to protecting the health and safety of workers. Ontario workplaces are the safest in Canada and among the safest in the world. Encouraging employers to put a priority on health and safety management through a voluntary accreditation program is just one more step our government is taking to nurture a culture of workplace safety and ensure workers get home safe every single day.”
“Organizations that successfully implement occupational health and safety management systems also improve safety environments and increase hazard reporting by workers. Keeping workers safe on the job just makes good business sense.”
